First Visit to the Gynecologist

Introduction

Purpose of the Test

It is advised to visit the gynecologist by the 12th week of pregnancy. During the visit, the doctor will review the pregnant woman's medical history, including medications, surgeries, medical conditions, drug sensitivities, family medical history, smoking, and other relevant risk factors for the pregnancy's progression. The gynecologist will also ensure that the pregnant woman is taking the correct dosage of folic acid.
If genetic screening tests have not been conducted, the doctor will discuss appropriate screening tests based on the woman's and her partner's ethnic backgrounds.

At the doctor's discretion, an internal gynecological examination may be conducted to assess the size of the uterus, the length of the cervix, and ensure its closure. If the doctor's clinic is equipped with an ultrasound device, an initial scan, commonly referred to as a "early pregnancy ultrasound," will be performed.

This first ultrasound examination, typically conducted at 6-7 weeks, aims to determine the pregnancy's location (ectopic or intrauterine), the number of fetuses, and to detect a fetal heartbeat. In the early stages, before the fetus is visible, the test can determine gestational age by measuring the gestational sac's diameter. If a fetus is observed, gestational age can be verified by assessing its size and confirming its alignment with the expected gestational age.

The gynecologist will also instruct the pregnant woman to undergo blood and urine tests to evaluate her overall health, determine her blood type, assess antibody levels that could impact pregnancy, and measure her iron levels. Iron levels will be monitored throughout the pregnancy as many women experience anemia due to iron deficiency during this time.

Performing a urine test near conception is customary to enable early detection of urinary tract infections before symptoms manifest. In pregnant women, bacteria in the urine necessitates treatment even without symptoms to mitigate risks to the fetus.

Some gynecologists provide regular pregnancy monitoring in their clinics, while others refer pregnant women to nurses' clinics for this monitoring. During this follow-up, pregnant women's weight and blood pressure are monitored, an initial urine test is conducted to detect protein, and a general assessment of the pregnant woman's condition is conducted (evaluation of vaginal discharge, varicose veins, and other symptoms if present).
